Your Ultimate Guide to Celery Juicing

Curious about celery juice but feeling lost? You’re not alone! Countless health enthusiasts have stood where you are, wondering how to take that first step. It’s not just a trend—it’s a game changer. Trust me, I’ve lived it. Celery juice was my first mate on a transformative journey, healing my body in ways I never imagined possible.

This guide is your map to navigating the amazing world of celery juicing.

If you’re thirsting for the full celery saga, I can’t recommend Medical Medium’s “Celery Juice” book enough. It’s a treasure trove of knowledge that’ll take you from novice to expert. But for now, let’s start with the basics.

Let’s Get Started

  • 1) Buy a Juicer: Medical Medium suggests Omega (do this if you’re committed and want to juice celery for more than a year, I currently use the MM1500BL13 Omega Slow Juicer, it’s around $470 ish). I started with an Aicok juicer (budget friendly) and used it for almost four years, but just checked on Amazon and I don’t believe they’re in production anymore. It’s probably for the best because after three years, my Aicok was taking roughly 40 minutes to juice 16-20 ounces. Just remember to look for a masticating juicer, which essentially mimics a chewing process so as not to lose essential nutrients via heat with a faster juicer. I recently bought an Omega and I am SO pleased with it! Juicing and cleaning combined takes about 20 minutes now.
  • 2) Commit to buying celery bunches every week. I remember I used to grocery shop once a month because I was eating out every day. But with my new lifestyle, I grocery shop 1-2 times a week! I have to plan in advance to buy 1-2 bunches of celery for each day I’m juicing. I drink celery juice Monday through Saturday (I take Sabbath on Sunday, so no juicing then). So 6 days times 2 bunches is 12 bunches I’ll have to buy for the week, which is already 2 grocery bags at the store. Luckily I have a car, but for city dwellers, you may have to get delivery or be the first one at the farmers markets or just go every other day on your way from work. I say two bunches because a lot of celery bunches are very skinny and will not yield 16 ounces. I found the celery bunches at Whole Foods in my town to be especially skinny. Designate a spot for them in your fridge every time, for quicker access and so you don’t accidentally forget that you have celery and it rots.
  • 3) Juicing Instructions: Turn on the juicer (woo!).
    • Cut off the root end so that you have individual stalks.
    • Rinse each stalk under a faucet or a huge bowl with water quickly, getting rid of the main dirt. No need to over clean or scrub. I typically do this one by one as each stalk is juicing so i don’t waste time.
    • Remove large leaves, otherwise your juice will be very bitter. The darker the leaves, the more bitter the taste. The small bushier leaves near the middle smaller stalks are fine to juice, but I tend to chop those off. I also remove any rotten areas or dried up areas (you can see the edge peeling showing the inside as dry).
    • Stick one stalk in the chute bottom end first. You may need to nudge it down if it’s not catching on. Once it’s done juicing, I stick the next stalk in. I try not to rush it otherwise it backs up.
  • 4) Drink Celery Juice first thing in the morning (after lemon water). You will need to set aside about 20-40 minutes before you start work or exercise or whatever you do. Plan for it and work it in your schedule. I was able to make celery juice and clean all the parts in 20 minutes when I was working full-time, but that was me doing it on the fly. I tend to chug my celery juice, but if you’re a slow sipper, you’ll need to add additional time. Keep in mind: You cannot eat or drink anything 15-30 minutes before AND after drinking celery juice. This is paramount! If you don’t allow enough time, the celery juice won’t be as effective since it’s essentially being mixed with other foods. Be mindful of that when you’re trying to eat breakfast. Not all celery is created equal, just like you and me, each stalk is so diverse. Every time I drink celery, it tastes a bit different. I’ve gotten extremely bitter juice, which made me gag each sip. I’ve also gotten such sweet juice, which tasted like sweet milk! I know, surprising!

How Much Should I Make?

At first, shoot for 9 ounces of celery juice, maybe even less. Then a week later or whenever you can stomach it, aim for 16 ounces. If you want to do a deeper cleanse, I’d shoot for 32 ounces. Nowadays, I aim for 18-24 ounces, depending on the bunches I buy. Be careful not to rush into 24 ounces straight away, it may exacerbate any ailments (although still good for your body), especially if your body isn’t used to eating clean.

Organic Or Regular Celery?

Organic is always preferred for me, especially since there’s no skin covering like bananas have. But, a lot of times my grocer won’t have organic, which means I’ll gladly opt for regular celery. Sometimes if I’m low on money, I’ll get regular celery since it’s cheaper. Local and organic is definitely preferred. There are microorganisms in the soil that affect your body when you purchase local and/or organic. All of that is on the celery when you first purchase it. Which is why I only rinse my celery stalks, and not do a heavy cleaning or use any vegetable cleaner, because it tends to strip away some of those nutrients on the surface of the skin. For more info on this, definitely check out the book Eat Dirt by Dr. Josh Axe.

Do I Need A Juicer? I Have A Blender.

Juicer is best, but you can definitely go the blender route, especially if you want to save money for now. But you need to buy a nut mesh bag, it’s like $5-10. After you’ve blended the celery, put some of the contents in the mesh bag. Then, squeeze out the juice into a cup. Keep batch squeezing until you reach desired amount. I’ve only done this method once when I was traveling and my hands became really itchy, so I had to stop. But you can buy disposable plastic clear gloves in bulk and use them every time you squeeze pulp/handle food.

Can’t I Just Buy Celery Juice?

There are so many juice shops that bottle celery juice and sell it; I would highly advise against buying these. Unless they juiced it that morning and the bottle is only good for a few hours in a tightly sealed bottle, it is nearly useless. The ingredients of celery juice get weaker after each hour, which is why it’s best to juice celery and drink it immediately. When I first started drinking celery juice, I’d buy it at Juice Generation in Union Square in New York. It cost about $8 a day. I realized that depending on what they juiced before and who was juicing it, my celery juice had traces of the previous juice in it (i.e. lemon juice), so it wasn’t pure celery juice and had weird after tastes. I also went to a juice shop in Michigan, and they actually added a bunch of water to my celery juice. This is completely wrong and ruins the benefits of celery juice; I understand they probably added water because of the taste, but again, it almost becomes useless.

Can I Add Other Ingredients?

It is absolutely crucial that your celery juice does not mix with any other liquid. No exceptions. The sodium cluster salts inside celery juice works at its absolute best when working alone. So do not mix it. Otherwise, you’re wasting your time, money and energy on juicing and the healing benefits celery juice has to offer. Nothing else should be mixed in your celery juice!

Will I Get Diarrhea?

Once you start drinking celery juice, it will very quickly start expelling toxicity and getting rid of bad gunk in your body in any of these manners: flatulence, diarrhea, excessive poop and pee. So, once you start juicing, make sure there is a bathroom available to you at any given moment. Because your body may all of a sudden need to use it. Some people get explosive diarrhea, some just experienced their regular bowel movement. Just note that celery juice helps your liver with over 2,000 different functions, so if you don’t experience a bowel movement, just trust that it’s helping your liver with something else more direly needed in your body.

Stomach Woes Be Gone

Final tip: whenever you feel stomachaches or indigestion, whip up some celery juice and it should ease the pain within 20 minutes or so. I had stress pains in my stomach after work one day and after eating dinner the pains just got worse. So around 9 or 10 pm, I juiced some celery, like about 12 ounces, and within 10 minutes, my pains went away. It was amazing!

Maintenance

Here’s the not so fun part, cleaning all the juicing parts after each session. Pro Tip: I wash the parts immediately after juicing white i’m drinking the celery juice to save time. If I wait for more than 20 minutes to wash all the parts, I notice the parts “rust” a lot faster due to the fibrous parts being stuck on it for longer, so I try to wash it immediately after and I use the brush to scrub firmly. Also, every month or so, I dunk all the parts in a large basin with baking soda and vinegar and let it soak for 20-30 minutes before scrubbing it again.

Feel free to comment or send any questions my way. I’d be happy to answer as quickly as possible. Juicing celery can be frustrating at first, but once you know the healing benefits and you see your body healing, it’s totally addicting after that. Happy juicing!!
